Space Paper Mache

Follow these steps to make your own paper mache solar system! Create your own planets and get creative!

-This is a messy activity, so it is advised to work in an area you don't mind making a mess in!-

Materials You Need:

Glue:
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2/ 2.5 cups of water
  • Shallow dish
Paper- Mache:
  • Newspapers or magazines
  • Scissors
  • Balloon or Dish
  • Plastic bag
  • Rectangular box
  • Covering for the table
Decoration:
  • Paints
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Markers
  • Tissue paper
  • Tinfoil

Instructions:

  1. Mix flour and water in the shallow dish to make glue. The consistency should be watery, but not too thick or thin.
  2. Cut newspapers or magazines into strips.
  3. Blow up the balloon to the desired size and place it in the rectangular box.
  4. Dip the newspaper/ magazine strips into the glue. Run the strip between 2 fingers to remove excess glue and place it on the balloon.
  5. Repeat step 4 until the balloon is covered. It is recommended to cover the balloon in several layers as it will make the paper mache more sturdy.
  6. Set the paper-mache aside to dry completely and then decorate it!
If you do not wish to use a balloon, use a dish instead! Cover the dish with a plastic bag and start at step 4. The plastic bag will make it easier to remove the paper mache from the dish when the paper mache dries completely.

I hope you have fun making your paper mache solar system! Get creative and make all kinds of planets and stars! Enjoy and check out our other posts!
