Obstacle Course

This homemade obstacle course features 6 stations. Each station is a fun, new challenge that you get to create! Have fun and race to be the first to complete the course!

I offer one bit of caution to parents. This course was designed for children eight years old and older. Uninflated balloons and broken pieces of balloons present a suffocation hazard for children younger than eight. Because of the danger of suffocation, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents and guardians do not allow children under the age of eight to play with uninflated balloons without supervision.

Materials You Need:

  • Balloons
  • Plastic cups
  • Colored construction paper
  • Printer paper
  • Yarn
  • Markers
  • A straw (plastic)
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Obstacle Course Stations:

1. Line tracer:
  • Put 2 stacks of 3 pieces of printer paper side by side in front of you.
  • Draw a line/shape on each paper. Indicate on the paper which end of the shape/ line is the start and which is the goal. Tape the paper down to the floor so that it won't move.
  • Trace both lines/ shapes with your finger (one on each paper, using both hands at the same time).
2. Bear Walk Ring Drop:
  • Fold construction paper 3 times (in a trifold pattern), and cut along the folds so that you have 3 long strips of paper. You will need 5 strips.
  • Tape each strip into a ring/ circle. You will make 5 rings.
  • Crumple up printer paper (half sheets) to make 5 balls.
  • Place the rings on the floor. Do a bear walk/ crawl to the ring, pick up the crumpled ball with one hand (while balancing on the other), and place the ball inside the ring.
3. Duck Walk Collector:
  • Duck walk down the hall while collecting the rings and balls from "Bear Walk Ring Drop."
4. Monster Paw Hopscotch:
  • Cut out a stencil of a monster claw. You can make your own by drawing a paw that is rounded at the bottom and spiked at the top. Trace and cut out about 14 monster claws in construction paper. The more you have the better!
  • Place the claws on the ground, 2 next to each other at a time, and jump with both feet. You will jump and face the direction that the claws are pointed.
5. Balloon Cup Stack:
  • Place one cup directly in front of you. Line up 4 other cups behind the first cup, from left to right.
  • You want to stack all of the cups together inside the first cup using the balloon.
  • To move the cups, place the balloon inside the cup. When you blow, the balloon will expand and you will be able to pick the cup to be stacked. When the cup is in position, you can let the air out and the cup will fall into the stack.
  • Repeat until you finish stacking all of the cups.
6. Rocket Launch:
  • Decorate the printer paper by drawing a rocket and cut it out with a scissor.
  • Thread the plastic straw through the string/ yarn. Tie up the string so that it is suspended in the air.
  • Blow up your balloon (not too big) and tape it to the straw so that the mouth/ opening of the balloon is facing you. DO NOT TIE BALLOON SHUT (just hold it closed). The balloon should be taped in the center of the straw, with the opening near the end of the straw.
  • Tape your rocket to the straw. Now let go of the balloon and watch your rocket fly down the string!

I hope you have fun with your obstacle course!
